Identifying Your Target Market

By Empowered Woman On March 7, 2010 Under Branding You Inc, Newsletter

One very overlooked marketing strategy to attract clients and prospects is identifying your target market for your niche.

Three questions have to be asked.

1. Who is your target market?

2. What are they looking for, need and want?

3. How can I solve their problems?

Only after answering these questions and really identifying your target market will you be able to attract a select group of interested and pre-qualified prospects to you using the attraction marketing model.

Who is your target market?

Let’s look at a real life example, such as selling your hairstyling service.

Of course, your goal is to get people coming to you that need a haircut or other related services.  Your first step is knowing which section of that market you want to sell to.  If you choose the whole group, then you will have many other hairdressers as your direct competition.

First of all, you must realize that there are actually several target markets to consider in this example.

Your goal is not to attract all the markets looking for a haircut but to specialize in a specific area that targets a certain type of person.

You have to identify what will make you stand out of the crowd and make people  use your services over others.

This knowledge willput you way ahead of the other stylists in your area and have you fishing in the best fish pond around.

So think about what your market is thinking, wanting and needing.

This is not rocket science but it is the formula that will make your services stand out.

Just off the top, here are some examples of such targeted markets:

1. people wanting a plain, every day cut, nothing fancy

2. people wanting a modern cut that take s special skills

3. cuts strictly for men/women/children

4. elderly people looking for a poodle style permanent

5. teenagers looking for Mohawks, red stripes, etc

You get the idea.

Here’s a big tip. Appeal to that specific market’s vanity and need to stand out of the crowd just as much as your need is to be the best in your niche and be seen as that go to person.

Just think about how you felt when you were given a really great haircut. Write down all those emotions. Use emotional words such as desire, covet,  extraordinary, transform, best, biggest, greatest, proven results, envy.

These are the words you will need to use to attract your market.

But you think that your writing skill leave a lot to be desired? Never fear because acquiring good writing skill can be learned and we here, at Empowered Women Entrepreneur, will do just that.

Very thoughtful questions. Actually every one who cares serious about his/her business should think these 3 questions a lot and answer them well.

Sometimes finding the correct target market is hard to do. I’ve found that you have to test out different markets before you truly know who is your big customers. Thanks for the info and the appeal to that specific market’s vanity tip.
